POSITION: Journalist Cairns Community Newspapers' philosophy is the public's right to know about matters of importance is paramount. The newspapers have a special responsibility as surrogate of its readers to be a vigilant watchdog of their legitimate public interests. Our journalists cover all sorts of topics: news; items of cultural, sporting or scientific interest; local community and national events; entertainment, politics, lifestyle and human interest stories - in short anything in the public arena which is interesting or breakthrough.

There are placements available in just about every area of CCN. And they’re not just for school students. So whatever your age, sex or race and whichever area you’re interested in, chances are we’ll have something that’s right for you.

Did you ever think you'd loved to be involved in the newspaper business but thought it impossible? Do you have good people skills? Are you good with computers? Have you worked in sales or written articles for a local newsletter? What do you hope to gain from the placement? What are your ambitions for the future? These are the kind of questions you should be asking yourself.

All placements are unpaid and can last anything from a week to four weeks. Competition is fierce, so before you apply you’ll need to consider what you can offer and get in quick before the next uptake.

Student work experience

CCN offers an extensive work-experience program for university/ TAFE students, secondary school students in Years 10, 11 and 12 and foreign students. Placements are offered in a variety of areas within the company and are designed to give students a range of experiences which will better prepare them for the workforce.

These positions are offered across the Cairns Bulletin, Cairns Northern News, Southern Herald, CCNet.net.au and Cairnsnewspapers.com.au.

Work experience is for one week. We take students all year around and students may find themselves working in several areas of CCN during their work experience.

The different areas of work exprience with CCN are listed below:

Advertising Sales/ Telemarketing, Journalism, Photography, Graphic Design - IT, Web Design, Programming, Customer Service, Reception, Accounting, , Chinese-English Translators, Sports writing.

Why is work experience valuable?
It may give you insight into what you enjoy and don't enjoy in a working environment. Even a low-level job can give you a worm's-eye view of the realities of life in that organisation and offer the chance to talk to people doing the type of work you might hope to do in the longer term.

You are likely to acquire valuable transferable and practical skills how to deal with people, work in a team, use office equipment and IT packages, for example.

The key to any successful application is preparation. The more you know beforehand, and the longer you’ve had to think about what will be expected of you, the better your chances will be.
