International Student Welcome
Cairns will open its arms to international students when Study Cairns and the Cairns Regional Council host the annual Welcome for International Students on Friday 6th August.
The Welcome for International Students event provides the chance for the city’s Civic and Education Industry leaders to personally meet with international students who choose to study in Cairns.
The Welcome for International Students will be hosted by Study Cairns, Mayor Val Schier and attended by international students and representatives from language colleges, vocational training centres, TAFE, James Cook University, secondary schools, accommodation houses and education agents.
Students are to collect their free ticket from their school prior to attending.
Aussie Sausage Sizzle will be provided along with games, Lucky Door Prizes and loads of giveaways to local attractions.

Australia Japan Society - Student Scholarship Program 2010
Australia Japan Society 2010 - Student Scholarship for Year 9/10/11 During the December School Holidays of 2010, the Australia-Japan Society FNQ will again sponsor two students from a Cairns School, to live as Home-stay and study within a Japanese Junior High School for a 4 to 5 week period. Cairns Year 9 / 10 / 11 students are encouraged to apply for the scholarship and be in Japan during December 2010 and January 2011. The AJS with this Scholarship are building further relationships with the Cairns Sister Cities in both Oyama City and Minami Town. Criteria: 1)Applicants for this program must be current financial family members of an Australia-Japan Society (AJS). Application form located www.ajsfnq.org.au then click “Membership” 2)School within the Cairns Region and attending to Year 9.10 or 11. 3)The students must be studying Japanese language and have maintained sound grades in all general subjects for the last school term. 4)Applications are OPEN on 17th May 2010 and CLOSE on 16th July 2010. (Application: Typed or computer generated. If students fail to prepare the complete set of documents, the student will automatically be eliminated as a candidate. 5)First stage of selection from the applications and announced by end of July. 6)Second stage of selection is personal interviews and will be conducted in the afternoon on Sunday 15th August 2010. Students and parents must be available for this process as part of the application and unfortunately, if a student cannot be available for this process, the student will automatically be eliminated as a candidate. 7)The two successful students will be announced by the end of August 2010 and expected to visit either Oyama City or Minami Town, Japan in December 2010. The AJS Scholarship Package would include: Value approx AUS $6000.00 • Return International Flight • Meet & Greet at the airport • Transport & guide from Narita to / from final destination • Orientation in Cairns before departure • Orientation in Japan after arrive to the destination • 1 or 2 nights Initial Accommodation before or after home stay • Homestay Accommodation for 4 to 5 weeks (Possible multiple families) • Personal guidance and assistance by Student Counselor, ALT/CIR and the Board of education • Official Courtesy visit to Mayor’s office in Japan • School lunch for education period • Japanese cultural Experience Please note that a contribution fee of $500.00 per successful student would be required to be paid to AJS. Not includes - Costs of the passport, health and accident insurance, student spending money, clothing for the applicant’s welfare and any uniforms…etc) Students should complete the application form located through Australia Japan Society in Far North Queensland (The National Federation of Australia-Japan Societies website): www.ajsfnq.org.au then click “Events” for the application.
