Australian first in prostate cancer screening

A leading prostate cancer specialist, urologist Dr Peter Swindle, has launched Prostate Screen Queensland, the first prostate cancer screening clinic of its kind in Australia.
Until now, there has not been a dedicated service focused solely on delivering information regarding the pros and cons of prostate cancer testing in the country.
As the most common cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death in Australian men, Prostate cancer is an important issue.
The new service offers easily accessible and simplified testing for Prostate cancer by highly trained medical practitioners in a specialised primary care framework. Patients are now starting to benefit from this vital service.
“The sole focus of the consultation at Prostate Screen Queensland, is discussion and education regarding prostate cancer testing and early diagnosis. Informed decision making is vital,” said Dr Swindle, developer of Prostate Screen Queensland.
“This service aims to provide earlier detection and improve survival rates. As this has never been done before in Australia it provides a unique research opportunity and all data will be collected and collated for research purposes, it’s very exciting for us.” He said.
Prostate Screen Queensland does not advocate population based mass screening. As this is a primary care clinic, health conscious men and their families can make appointments directly without a referral.
Prostate Screen Queensland is situated at Mater Private Clinic, South Brisbane. Doctors can also refer their patients for a discussion regarding prostate cancer testing.
