Labour Tries, whilst Labor Lies
by Peter McCullagh

“Unions united… will never be divided.”  Battling the elements, approximately 600 union supporters marched to celebrate Labour Day in Cairns today.

Lead by the BLF in the Centennial Year, supporters all united to send a clear message to Anna Bligh regarding the numerous proposed asset sales.

ETU secretary, Peter Simpson, said ETU contingents will make the State Government’s asset sales policy the main issue this year.

“We intend to send another strong message to the State Government and Labor Party that the proposed sales are bad and unnecessary policy.  Labour Day is an ideal opportunity to again push for the Labor Party to return to ‘Labour’ values” Mr Simpson said.

Local organiser, Stuart Traill was thrilled with the turnout in Cairns.  With approximately 15 unions represented and 600 rain sodden supporters, the turn out was strong in spite of the weather.

“Today we sent a clear message to the state and federal governments collectively with regard to asset sales and privatisation.”

With a looming federal election this year, it will be essential that the Labor Party take heed of the Labour Day message from Queensland.

For the first time in many years the focus has been squarely upon anti – Labor government feelings.  Combine this with the declining voter support for the Labor government, Kevin Rudd will need to listen carefully to the Union movement before going to the polls.
