Irwin's memorial service to draw thousands
Sunday Sept 10
'Crocodile Hunter' Steve Irwin's private family funeral took place Saturday, September 9 around 2pm an Irwin family friend has confirmed.
The service took place at the Caloundra Gregson and Weight funeral home chapel and crematorium.
"Yesterday's service was a service for family and good friends, people who were close to Steve in recent years. "The council gave the family permission to bury Steve at the zoo and we think they're going to erect a monument there so visitors can continue to pay their respects." the friend told the Sunday Mail.
"Because of the tremendous public sympathy and support, we have decided to hold a full memorial service within the next two weeks at a suitable venue yet to be decided." Bob Irwin said.
Outside Australia Zoo Mr Irwin wandered around the grounds looking at the tributes left by the many people who have been steadily coming in every day to pay their respects to his son, their hero Steve Irwin.
“You’ve seen what it’s been like here,” Stainton, Steve Irwin's friend said at Australia Zoo as he pointed to the thousands of floral arrangements and other tributes.
“It could really be anywhere between 5,000 and 50,000.”
The only place large enough to hold thousands of Steve Irwins fans is Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane, with a 52,500-seat capacity. The memorial is expected to be held within two weeks.
Stainton said the public memorial service, could feature John Williams, as he was one of Steve's favourite Australian performers. He was particularly fond of one of his songs "True Blue". Williams has also performed at Australia Zoo before.
Because of Steve's immense popularity. His fans have the need to mourn his death, pay their last respects and say goodbye.
The Queensland Premier Mr Peter Beattie has said that the Queensland government will be acknowledging Steve Irwin's contribution to Queenland with a permanent memorial, perhaps naming a national park after him.

No state funeral for Irwin
Thursday Sept 7

Steve Irwin's father Mr Bob Irwin told a packed news conference at Australia Zoo that the offer of a state funeral would be refused.
"The state funeral would be refused because he is an ordinary guy, he is just an ordinary bloke and he wants to be remembered as an ordinary bloke," Mr Irwin said.
Bob Irwin was very emotional. He thanked Australians for their support the family has received.
"It's extremely hard for Terri and the children. The thing I'd like to say is, I'd like to thank all the people for the wonderful tributes that have come in. It's absolutely amazing."
He was accompanied by Steve's business manager and friend, John Stainton.
Mr Irwin confirmed the family had made no plans yet for a funeral, the final decision rests with Steve's wife, Terri.
People continue to offer their condolences by placing cards
flowers, messages and an increasing number of khaki shirts.
Mr Irwin said Terri was "holding up very well considering. She's extremely concerned for her children".
He asked that the media give them "a little bit of a break for the children's sake".
As for what he was doing when he received the news of Steve's untimely death at 44, he said: "This may sound really really weird but at the moment I heard the news I was about to bury a cow that died calving."
"Steve and I weren't like father and son, we never were. We were good mates," he said.
"I'll remember Steve as my best mate ever," he said.
He talked about the many adventures they had together. "Steve knew the risks of the type of work he was doing and he wouldn't have wanted it any other way,"
"Both of us over the years had some very close shaves and we both approached it the same way in that we made jokes of it. That's not to say we were careless but we treated it like it was just part of the job, nothing to worry about really. He said.
Steve Irwin's body flown from Cairns
Wednesday Sept 6.
The body of Steve Irwin was flown to the Sunshine Coast Hinterland from Cairns last night. Close friend John Stainton was accompanying the casket.
Funeral arrangements to farewell Steve Irwin are expected to be finalised soon.
Premier of Queensland Mr Peter Beattie has offered a state funeral and said the Irwin family was expected to decide today whether or not they would accept the offer.
"It is important that we talk to his family. They are grieving. It would be quite wrong to do anything other than discuss this with their family over the next few days, and we do not intend to rush this at all." Mr Beattie said.
"I haven't thought about and I don't know how they would react to it but I feel that when you're in a public place like he was, that people do need to be able to share some closure," "I think it probably would be fitting but it's up to Terri." Mr Stainton said.
“My office has been swamped by Queenslanders wanting to know what we are going to do (to honour him). We will make sure there is some form of national recognition," Mr Beattie said.
Busloads of visitors from across the globe, local residents and school kids are arriving at Australia Zoo to pay tribute to the Crocodile Hunter.
Michael Hornby, Zoo spokesman told reporters that the staff are coming to terms with the loss.
"It'll be impacting us for many, many weeks, months, maybe even years," he said.
Steve Irwin is dead
Monday Sept 4.
Austraila's ambassador for our wildlife has died suddenly from injuries sustained Monday from a stingray barb to the heart while diving. Steve, also kwown around the world as 'Crocodile Hunter' was filming "Ocean's Deadliest" for his daughter Bindi's new TV series at the time of the accident around 11am AEST on Batt Reef, Port Douglas north of Cairns.
"He came on top of the stingray and the stingray's barb went up and into his chest and put a hole into his heart," his friend and colleague John Stainton said.
A Queensland Rescue helicopter crew, including a doctor and paramedic was flown in to try and revive him. CPR was administered during the rush to meet the helicopter at nearby Low Isle but to no avail and he was pronounced dead soon after arriving.
"The world has lost a great wildlife icon, a passionate conservationist and one of the proudest dads on the planet," Stainton told reporters in Cairns. "He died doing what he loved best and left this world in a happy and peaceful state of mind. He would have said, 'Crocs Rule!" Stainton said as he wiped tears from his eyes.
He is survived by his wife Terri and two children Bob and Bindy. Terri was in Tasmania trekking Craddle Mountain at the time of the accident.
Steve Irwin and his family ran Australia Zoo north of Brisbane where flowers and condolences are pouring in.
He was a true blue Aussie icon and wildlife conservationist who donated money earned from his documentaries watched in 130 countries around the world to help injured wildlife. He shared with audiences his unique way of interacting with nature's creatures.
A sad loss and a shock to all Australians and the countless people around the world who loved him.
Stingray Attacks
Tuesday Sept 5
Michael Angel-Dzubiel- CCN Reporter

The stingray is usually non-aggressive, but is capable of inflicting injuries if threatened.
Treading on the dorsal surface by mistake or swimming too close above a ray can result in a reflex upward and forward swing of the tail.
The injuries can be either a sword like lacerations or penetrating injuries with the serrated spine.
Serious injury can either be from the physical trauma of a vital body part, from the venom of the spine or both.
Local venom effects are usually more dangerous in stab injuries, but if the barb pierces a vital organ or structure injuries may be more dangerous than the venom effects.
Penetrating cardiac injuries have generally been fatal. In 1938, an adult woman died after a stab wound to the heart by a stingray. The autopsy showed that the ventricles had been completely transfixed by the barb.
An Australian soldier died in 1945 after a stab wound to the heart while swimming in seawater baths near Melbourne, Victoria.
A Prawn Fisherman also died after bieng stabbed in the chest off the Queensland coast while wrestling the animal off the sorting tray in 1990.
Being an ex fisherman in the prawn, scallop and tuna industries across Australia, I have had my share of toxins inflicted by many marine creatures including Bullroutes, Stonefish, Catfish and "Happy Moments" (a paradoxical nickname).
These creatures fall under the pain infliction as defence mechanisms category.
While fishing I handled a great many different species of stingray all shapes and sizes, one particular breed was extremely aggressive and would attempt to thrust it's barbs (some have more than one) into you. I suspect this is the one Steve Irwin so unfortunatley crossed. Usually about 1 metre wingspan, black on top with smooth slimy skin and a distinctive flap of skin extending along the tail about 5cm in width.
Unlike neuro toxins found in snake venom which effectively stops the heart, as far as I know a stingray's barb harbours all sorts of nasty biological bugs derived over millions of years of evolution that cause severe pain and swelling much the same as the fish mentioned above(except for the Stonefish which has a sack of poison at the tip of each dorsal spine).
If Steve had left the barb in maybe he would have survived. I'm not a medical person but my thoughts are if left in it would have effectively plugged the hole and removing it, though a natural instinct may have lead to his death.

Condolecences received will be passed onto the Irwin family.

To The Wonderful People of Australia,
I am deeply sadden by our loss of Steve Irwin. He was a major reason behind my decision to visit your wonderful country. I was in Australia during Holiday 2004. I enjoyed my visit to The Australia Zoo in Beerwah and my stay in The City of Cairns. I made these places my primary destinations during my visit, because of watching "The Crocodile Hunter" on the Discovery Channel. It was the best vacation I have ever had and I will be back! To me, this just does not seem real. To any American you ask, his name always comes up when anyone speaks of Australia. Steve Irwin is to wildlife preservation as? Elvis Presley is to Rock and Roll! He is and will forever be, a true immortal icon as Australia's very own "King of the Wild!" Steve knew the risks and enjoyed every moment of his life. I believe he enjoyed it right to the very end. His contribution to wildlife conservation and education will never be forgotten and will benefit Australia and many other regions of the world, for many years to come. My deepest sympathy and condolences go out to the Irwin family, The City of Cairns, and all the great people of Australia. My heart goes out to all of you.
Sincerely,
Bret Maverick, Mesa, Arizona USA

What a sad loss for Australia and the world of nature. I know what the Aussie's thought of Steve and he certainly was highly regarded outside of Oz.
What a sad loss.

I am deeply saddened and shocked to learn of the tragic loss of a man who was bigger than life. I live in a town in the middle of the United States, far from any ocean, and greatly loved watching the “Crocodile Hunter” on T.V. Steve’s love for what he was doing, and for the animals, was evident in his enthusiastic and passionate actions. His travels to other regions of the world to try and help other animals in distress, and to educate others, was always something I admired about him.
He will be greatly missed by this land-locked, but sea-loving person way up North in the United States. My condolences to the friends, co-workers and family at the Australia Zoo and to his wife and children all of whom he so obviously deeply, deeply loved. And to the animals, Steve can’t be replaced, but you will be cared for and loved by the many other staff and family around the world, thanks to Steve’s drive to see that you are cared for. God Bless you all during this time of extreme sadness.

On behalf of my husband and myself, please accept our most heartfelt condolences. Having watched Steve Irwin for all these years it seems unreal that he has left us all. His legacy is staggering and may his spirit of conservation live on.
Rest in peace Steve.

We are so incredibly sorry for the loss of Steve Irwin. He has been able to allow people to feel as if they were a part of his work and his world. He will be sorely missed by our family.

I was very shocked to receive this sad news upon waking up this morning. My family and I live a quiet, uneventful life in the small backwoods region of Wilkesboro, North Carolina in the United States and Watching many of Steve Irwins shows were a means for us to have some form of escape from daily life.
My 4 children all laughed and loved him. My husband and I had admiration for a man that was hell bent on showing the world many animals, large and small, that most of us will never see in our lifetimes.
Croc Hunter......a man that will be greatly missed and leaves behind a legacy of knowledge and research. Our condolences go to Terri, Bindi, Bob and all of the members of the Australia Zoo that Steve called home.

Deepest condolences to the family of Steve Irwin. I grew up in Brisbane and still have photos of me with the Koalas and huge python when Steves Dad first opened the original sanctury. I now live in Idaho USA, (Near Terries home state) and have followed his great pursuit of showing the animal world through his eyes, stay strong, be blessed know that we care.

As a teacher of second grade students in Florida, USA, I often entertain and bring stories of Austraila alive to my students using an impersonation of the, "Crocodile Hunter". There is not a single child, whether from the ghettos or living in the homes along the beach who does not beam with joy upon thinking about the Crocodile Hunter. I know that Steve has erased ignorance for wildlife and the environment on a level that is still being measured. I know that his children and family will find peace, pride and happiness in the great life he lived. I am going surfing today and dedicate my waves today and everything good I do today to Steve Irwin, his family, and his love for the world around us.
RIP Steve Irwin. We love you.

I work the night shift and we get to play the radio while we stock shelves. I heard the news announcement and had to finish out the work day just limp with grief and disbelief. I thought “oh, please, let this be one of Steve’s pranks… oh, please don’t let this be true!”
Oh, I’m so very sorry for Terri, Bindi, and Bob, and all of his mates. I can barely imagine the pain and loss. He seemed invincible. He was twice as full of LIFE as anyone I have ever met. I am so hurting and sad – I would much prefer this to be a ‘prank’ gone wrong and to now hear on the news “it was all a mistake, Steve-o is fine.”
When the world is full of people barely alive, who full of ennui trudge from day to day without spirit or passion . . . it is that much worse to have that sparkling man snuffed out. I am deeply glad, though, that it was not a car-wreck, or the hand of man that took his life. Those who did not ‘know him’ cannot understand that he died doing what he not only loved but also believed in.
I will never forget you Steve.

To all the fellow admirers: It is a sad day to know one of the greatest animal lovers has passed away. He followed his heart and knew the potential risks he took. That's what made him so exciting to me. He faced his fears!! I also appreciate the great strides he made towards the conservation of wildlife. I am a fellow animal lover and truly loved watching him in his documentaries. He had a one-of-a-kind personality and will be missed not only to Australia but by everyone across the world. My condolences go out to his family and close friends. Crikey Steve!! This is my farewell to you!

It is with such great sadness that I offer my sympathies to the friends and family of Steve Irwin. His loss has been terrible for my family as well, especially for my children, who grew up watching his shows.
Breault Family, Rhode Island, USA
My son grew up watching Steve and I watched along with him. Steve lived life on the edge, loving every moment of it. He took risks most of us wouldn't dream of, and he was never afraid. He respected all animals and humans alike in a world where many people can't even respect one another. He had endless energy, enthusiasm and a lust for life. He has a wonderful spirit, and he brought so much joy and happiness to the world. He taught people all about the different critters he encountered and how to respect them in their natural habitat. Yes, I realize that he passed away doing what he loved best, but that doesn't mitigate the loss the world feels right now. Because of him this world was a better place. My condolences to Terri and his children. Rest in peace "Crocodile Hunter".
We will never forget you.

When I was younger I would dutifully wait out the day for his television show to air on Animal Planet. I would watch every episode, every marathon, and even entered one of the contests at one point. Occasionally, I would even whip out my sketchbook and draw pictures of the animals that he interacted with, jotting down little notes about what he said about them as though I were in school, listening to a teacher.
His show inspired me greatly as a kid and taught me so much about wildlife and just how wonderful the world is, how diverse life really is and how much about the world I really didn't know. I looked up to him as a sort of childhood hero, someone whose actions I saw as brave and courageous, rather than reckless and unintelligent as some others did.
And so, when I logged onto AOL today and saw the report... I felt as though something in me just... died. I brought a hand to my lips and shook my head, clicking on the link to read further, hoping beyond all hope that it was a hoax, a trick. Discovering that the article was, in fact, a truth... I cried for the first time in years. I couldn't believe that someone so important in my life was dead; that my childhood hero was really gone.
Even as I'm writing this, my eyes are clouded with tears and my heart is sinking. I guess that... writing it down like this is like finally accepting it; finally accepting that Steve Irwin, the man that I thought would never, ever die is really, truly gone.
I heart goes out to his family, his friends, and to all of his grieving fans and supporters...
Thank you, Steve, for all that you've done. May you rest in peace.

I know that I may never be as great as he was...and I never got to meet him although that was one of my greatest ambitions...I will certantly work hard to continue his legacy and teach more people about his conservation efforts. -- Kara Stephens USA

This has come as such a horrible shock and nothing can stop the pain you are enduring, but all these letters made me feel so proud of Steve. What a wonderful legacy he has left for his children. How many children who have a parent die has so many hundreds of hours of their father doing what he loved preserved on tape...and having such a GREAT time at it too. My prayers are with you Terri, Bindi and little Bob. The staff at the zoo will keep his dreams alive. God bless you all and thank you for sharing him with the world.

Today is a very sad day for us all animal lovers from around the world when we hear that Steve had passed on. We love to watch his show and he made us realize that there is some very different animals out there and let us know what to look out for and show us what they do when they feel in danger. We will miss him very much, we lost another icon as we did over here in North America, the icon was Dale Earnhardt Sr. a NASCAR driver. we sent our deepest regards out to the famliy and friends of Steve and Teri Irwin.

Words hardly begin to encompass the total loss I think so many feel. Our hearts go out to his family and friends and staff who worked with him day in and day out. ‘Good onya’ guys to keep Australia Zoo open and running in spite of the serious heartache you’re feeling. We do feel your pain. An emotional tsunami. A tear in the fabric of the universe. As a fellow rescuer, to lose one so in love with life and passionate about his goals and beliefs is just devastating. Let’s hope the world will carry on Steve’s hopes and dreams and share his enthusiasm for those creatures less understood.

Thank you so much for sharing the man you loved with so many. I know you will continue to inspire us with your strength and determination as you carry on the legacy that Steve has left behind.

Dear Terry and family:
Your loss is unimaginable. I have shed many tears for Steve, for you Terry and your two children, the Country of Australia, and all the animals on our planet.
You are strong Terry, you will in time pull thru this nightmare and manage to go on, but there will always be an empty place, and an irreplaceable Steve, left in your heart, mind, body and soul, and I want you to keep that precious loss and shed as many tears that you need to, if it be for the rest of your life.
It would be unfair to yourself to hold it in, stiff upper lip thing. Steve and you had something a lot of married people only see glimpses of in their marriage, and I saw it in your marriage, and I will always keep you in my prayers and mind, and will grieve, not as often as you will, but when memories reocur, or news clips or anniversaries are shown on American T.V., I will be there shedding tears of mine all over again as if it just happened.
I'm from Minnesota, Terry and if you ever need to reach out, I would be here, anonymously and privately for you.

I, like many, am deeply saddened by the untimely death of Steve Irwin. I remember watching him so many times on telly and being totally taken into his world of love and enthusiasm for wildlife. My heart sank when I heard the news on the way into work on Monday. I went into work feeling pretty low only to find an office full of people who felt the same. We sat talking of Steve and the many fond memories we all had of him showing us around his back garden. My sincerest sympathies go to His Family, all at Australia Zoo, and his close friends.

God bless you Irwin xx I can't imagine how much pain they must be going through, it must be tough losing a father and a dear husband. I was saddened by the news, I enjoyed watching his programmes as they were full of thrill, danger and excitement. Sometimes I used to think he was crazy, but I guess that was just steve!!
He didn't deserve to die, especcially in that way. He was a brave man and was never afraid, there are no words of comfort that I could give to his family simply because it will never take the pain away. There will always be something missing, and that will leave empty space in your life, all I can say is take time to let go (even though it will be really hard) and move on. And remeber that he will always be in your heart! With deepest simpathy to the Irwin family,
God bless xxx

I was Extremely shocked & saddened to hear of Steve's tragic death. I have been a huge fan of the Crocodile Hunter for years. I find it very hard to believe he is gone. My deepest Condolences to the Irwin family. He was a good man and will never be forgotten!
FOR ALL I'll lend you for a little time, A child of mine, He said. For you to love while he lives, and mourn when he is dead. It may be six or seven years, or twenty-two or forty-three. Will you, til I call him back, Take care of him for me? He'll bring his charms to gladden you, and shall his stay be brief, You'll have his lovely memories as solace for your grief. I cannot promise he will stay, Since all from earth return, But there are lessons taught down there I want this child to learn. Now will you give him all your love, Nor think that labour vain. Nor hate me when I come to call, To take him back again? Dear Lord, Thy will be done. For all the joy thy child shall bring, The risk of grief we'll run. We'll shelter him with tenderness We'll love him while we may! For the happiness we've known, We'll ever grateful stay. But shall the angel call for him Much sooner than we planned, We'll brave the bitter grief that comes and try to understand.
GOD BLESS YOU STEVE

First my condolences go out to Steves family and closest friends who have lost a wonderful, son, husband, father and friend. I have watched the crocodile hunter for as long as it has been on and even had my children watching it to learn about conservation and animals around the planet. They laughed at his antics, cried when he cried and felt his joys and pains, his losses and sorrows. I pray that Terri have the strength to get through this time and be strong for her children. I also hope that she turns to steve's dad and allows him to help her with the children and to get her through this painful time of sorrow and sadness. Be thankful Terri for the love and joy that this man brought to your life and your children that you two share. They will always be a reminder of a part of him that will be with you forever. Look at them and see his smile and his antics and know he is with you always. Lastly be thankful for his very public life as you will forever have a record of the love you two shared through the stories he did with animal planet and the documentaries he did. Save them all and cherish them, let the children watch them and rejoice in the memories and the love. Remember he did what he loved and touched so many.
Thank you for sharing him with us. Cheryl, FL ,usa

To all of Steve's family, Australia, and animal lovers worldwide.
The loss of Steve is such a thunderous blow for all the world. I so enjoyed his wildlife programs on the Discovery Channel and when they were on the television, all else would stop. He was such an advocate for all wildlife as well as a superb teacher.
As sad as his passing is, we must remember and reflect on all the good he accomplished durning his lifetime.
My deepest sympathy to Terri, Bindi Sue, Bob and his parents. The world has lost a great educator.

From the deaths of my mother & grandmother I know that in this moment, the words seem hollow, but in the years to come you will find comfort in the esteem in which Steve was held. Shock, disbelief, and anger are the reactions I experienced when I learned of Steve Irwin's death. How could such a vital part of so many lives be gone ? Steve touched so very many lives with his vitality and enthusiasm. Steve was connected to countless souls who experienced his love of animals and his larger-than-life persona. A genuine one-of-a-kind who has earned a place in our world history. The Crocodile Hunter braved encounters with snarling crocs and slithering snakes intent upon inflicting harm upon him. He was fearless and sometimes reckless, but we all liked him and some of us loved him. Australia has lost a great son, father and husband. Crikey.
Mother Earth has lost a truly beautiful person who we all loved and admired so very much. He got in there and did what he could to make the world a better place for the animals. He taught people how to put love in their hearts for ALL creatures great and small. I wish everyone in the world was like Steve. Crikey, what a better place it would be. STEVE IRWIN, YOU MADE A VERY BIG DIFFERENCE! We will miss your happy face and bubbly personality, your down-to-earth nature, your wealth of knowledge, but most of all your beautiful and compassionate soul. You charmed us by just being you and your passing has broken our hearts. You will sorely be missed. Thankyou for all that you have done, tirelessly , for nature. We extend our deepest condolences to Steves' Dad, Terri, Bindi, Bob,all family and friends and also the animal kingdom who I'm sure will miss Steve very, very much. Our hearts go out to all of you.
