Centre officially opens

The Woree Community Learning Centre made a song and dance about the official opening of their state-of-the-art facility by Member for Cairns Desley Boyle.
Not surprising, considering that more than a $ 1 million has gone into the construction and fit-out of the facility.
“The Department of Education, Training and the Arts provided $600,000 through the Smart Schools Subsidy Scheme and $400,000 from the Cairns Education Renewal program,” Ms Boyle said.
“The Department of Housing has also contributed more than $280,000 through its Community Renewal program to employ a manager to establish learning programs at the centre and for the information technology fit-out of the building.”
The centre opened in July last year providing four additional classroom spaces, storage rooms, kitchen facilities and toilets and already more than 1,700 participants have attended numerous workshops, courses and community events hosted by the centre.
The facility is a valuable asset which is not only used for classes during school hours but also for community activities outside of school hours.
The school has built strong community partnerships with up to 20 local organizations including James Cook University, Playgroup Queensland, Centrecare, Mission Australia and the Pacific Communities Council.
“The Community Learning Centre is a great example of what can be achieved when schools work in partnership with the broader community.
Education and Training Minister Rod Welford said the government was committed to ensuring high quality, relevant facilities that serve the needs of students.
“I commend the principal and staff of Woree State High School for building strong relationships with the broader community and making best use of this wonderful facility,” Mr Welford said.
Woree school principal Tony Fuller said the school had partnerships with various organisations. “This centre allows us to deliver additional education programs by providing a base for other organizations to engage with the community,” Mr Fuller said.
